RODENTS CONTROL

Latin name: Rattus rattus
Appearance: Roof rats living in close association with humans, the head and body are 15 cm to 2o cm
long, and the tail is additional 17 to 25 cm. it has a weight 5 to 9 ounces

Reproduction and life span: Roof rats sexually mature in two to five months. Females produce 4 to 6
litters per year, adults live from 9 to 12 months. They have por sigh, but well senses of smell, taste,
hearing, and touch.
Habits: Rats are nocturnal. Outdoors Roof rats prefer nesting in trees, occasionally in burrows and
vegetation. In buildings, they prefer to nest the upper levels of the buildings, occasionally, in basements
and sewers.
Access points: Roof rats easily enter any buildings through 1⁄2 inch and larger gaps,

Foods: Roof rats prefer foods such as fruits vegetables, and cereals, nuts.
Diseases: These rats are associated with various diseases. Roof rats spread diseases as salmonellosis.

Leptospirosis is vectored by rats, this disease is acquired by eating food and drinking water which are
contaminated with infected rat urine.
Control: The successful program of rodent control is inspection, sanitation, exclusion.
Inspection: Identify signs of infestation, gnaw marks, droppings, tracks, burrows, rub marks, dark grease
spots left where the rats rub against, surfaces, runways, Damaged goods.
Sanitation: Removing food, water, and materials which provide harborage.
Exclusion: products designed to prevent pest entry and eliminate harborage sites, are used more
frequently within IPM Programs than other nonchemical products.
